The Dance
As the sun crept down behind the immense mountain range, I felt the bitterness of the air on my cheeks. As I climbed in altitude, I could sense the air becoming thinner. And colder. It was getting much colder. I yanked on my pack putting it in a more comfortable position, and kept walking. I noticed my shortness of breath. My feet were aching from wearing my hiking boots for so long. A tiny pebble, stuck in my boot irritated my right foot.
This grassy hill seemed to have no end. As if I would walk straight to the heavens if I made it to the top. In a way, that's just what would happen, as I had felt for so long. For so many years.
A sharp breeze rushed by, and I could feel it all the way through me, as though I was not even there. It made me hunch over more to hide myself from it. But who was I kidding? I decided against it, and stood up straight. I didn't care if I was a little cold.
Almost there, I thought. Many years and years of searching had guided me here. I knew I would be rewarded once I made it to the top. The legends had told me so. I could feel it pulsing through my veins. I suddenly hurried myself, no matter how tired I was. I needed to see it. I was desperate to. The fog from my breath clouded my vision as I ran through it.
Panting and out of breath, I made it to the top. I collapsed on all fours, desperate to rest. To rest my mind as well as my body. I lied there for what seemed an eternity. I kept breathing heavily. More out of excitement now than out of exhaustion. All I had to do was turn over, stand up and look. Move, I told myself. Get up!
My body cooperated. I stood and gazed over the edge. What a terrific view! This was the most beautiful place I could ever imagine. I looked down, then to my left, then right. My smile gradually faded.
Where was it? How?... why?.... A million questions ran through my head.
I fell to my knees. This had to be it. There was no where else it could be. I'd searched and searched. All over the world... and nothing. Not even here, when I was so sure. I couldn't help but lower my head and cover my face.
All my aching washed away then. All those years and all the frustration. It just seemed void. It was as if all those experiences were of another person. I looked out across the vast chasm. The mountains looked different to me now. The sun of another color. The sky so massive.
I stood again. The gentle mist of the lower clouds seemed to give birth to a dance. I walked as close to edge as I dared, closed my eyes, and outstretched my arms.
